Essential oils for hair can help you achieve shiner, glossier locks that grow faster. They can also help with issues such as hair loss, dandruff, alopecia and dry scalp. If used correctly essential oils can work wonders on your scalp and locks.



Safety When Using Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquid which can cause harm if not used correctly. Precautions need to be taken before using essential oils.

  • Essential oil should always be diluted down with either water, shampoo or carrier oils. Carrier oils are pressed from the fatty potions of plants such as nuts and seeds. These oils are used to dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin. Carrier oils literally carry the essential oil into the skin where it can be absorbed.
  • Never ever put neat essential oil onto the skin, because they are highly concentrated they can be damaging if too much is used.
  • Consult your doctor before using essential oils if you have any skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis etc.
  • Also be careful if you suffer from peanut allergies as some oils can contain traces of nuts.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant as some essentials oils are not to be used during pregnancy.
  • Never take essential oils internally.
  • If you have any sort of medical condition or are on medication consult your doctor before using any essential oils.
  • If you're using a new essential oils for the first time, do a skin test incase of a allergic reaction.
  • If any irritation occurs while using a essential oil, discontinue use immediately.
  • Be careful not to get any essential oil into your eyes.    

Skin Test

It's important to carry out a skin test before using a essential oil for the first time. Follow these simple steps to carrying out a skin test-

  • Mix two drops of essential oil with 5ml of carrier oil.
  • Make sure the skin is free from any body lotions or butter.
  • Apply a small amount of the mixture to the inside of your elbow and leave unwashed for 24 hours.
  • If any itching, swelling, redness, bumps etc occur then do not use the essential oil.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is one of the most commonly used oils and has a very sweet, relaxing scent. The oil is mainly extracted from the flowers of a lavender plant and has a range of benefits.

Benefits Of Lavender Essential Oil  -

  • Encourages hair growth.
  • Help soothe dry, itchy, flakey scalps.
  • Nourish and moisture the scalp and hair.
  • Treats conditions such as nits, lice and lice eggs.
  • Prevent hair loss.
  • Treat alopecia. 

How to use

  • Mix 2-5 drops of essential lavender oil to your shampoo and massage into the scalp and hair. Only add the essential oil to the amount of shampoo you're using that day not the whole bottle.
  • Mix 2 drops of lavender essential oil with 5 drops of carrier oil such as jojoba or almond and massage into your scalp. if done often can help simulate the scalp and encourage new hair growth. 

Lavender essential oil can be used on normal hair, oily hair and dry hair. 


Lemon Oil

Lemon essential oil has a very citrusy smell. It has both antiseptic and antibacterial properties, which is why it's useful in health problems and also cleaning products.

Benefits Of Lemon Essential Oil -

  • Helps combat dandruff.
  • Treats conditions such as nits, lice and lice eggs.
  • Good for a dry scalp.
  • Good for a under active sebaceous gland.
  • Get rid of toxins within the hair and scalp. 
  • Increases shine. 

How To Use -

  • Mix 2-5 drops of lemon essential oil to your shampoo and and massage into the scalp and hair. Only add the essential oil to the amount of shampoo you're using that day not the whole bottle.
  • To lift oil and grease from the hair use lemon essential oil as a hair rinse. Add 6-8 drops of oil to a cup of water and rinse through the hair after shampooing and conditioning.

Lemon essential oil can be used on oily hair and scalp.


Rosemary Oil

Rosemary essential oil is a popular choice of oil for its refreshing clean smell and healing properties. The oil extracts are distilled from the leaves of a rosemary bush.

How To Use -

  • To use as a conditioner oil mix 3 teaspoons of carrier oil with 4 drops of rosemary essential oil and apply to wet hair, leave for 20 minutes and rinse. 
  • Mix 2-5 drops of rosemary essential oil with your shampoo and massage into your scalp and hair. Only add the essential oil to the amount of shampoo you're using that day not the whole bottle. 

Rosemary essential oil can be used on normal, dry and oily hair.


Peppermint Oil

Peppermint essential oil has a very intense aroma, which is uplifting and revitalising. It contains menthol which gives that tingly, cooling sensation.

How To Use -

  • Mix 2 drops of peppermint essential oil with 5 drops of carrier oil and massage into scalp for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly.   

Peppermint essential oil can be used on oily hair. 


Sandalwood Oil

Sandalwood essential oil has a warm, woody, earthy aroma and is used for it's anti-inflammatory properties. Sandalwood is extracted from a ever green tree found in parts of Asia. The tree has to reach maturity which takes 60 years before it can be cut and made into essential oil.

Benefits of sandalwood essential oil-

  • Great for dry hair.

How to use-

  • Mix 2-5 drops of sandalwood essential oil with your shampoo and massage into scalp. Only add the essential oil to the amount of shampoo you're using that day not the whole bottle.
  • Mix 2-5 drops of sandalwood essential oil with your conditioner, massage into hair and comb through. 

Sandalwood essential oil can be used on dry hair and scalp.


Thyme Oil

Thyme essential oil has a warm, spicy aroma and is known for it's strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

How to use- 

  • Mix 2-5 drops of thyme essential oil with your shampoo and massage into scalp. Only add the essential oil to the amount of shampoo you're using that day not the whole bottle.
